Strange Creatures

Earth contains an astonishing number of biological entities.
Some appear harmless.
Some appear dangerous.
Others simply stand motionless and stare at WOT from a distance.

He has begun cataloguing these creatures carefully, though he admits many classifications remain uncertain.

WOT originally believed living things on Earth would follow understandable patterns.

This assumption has not survived field observation.

Some creatures possess too many legs.
Others possess none at all.
Certain species appear capable of flight despite looking entirely unsuitable for the task.
Many produce noises for no obvious practical reason.

WOT has also observed that humans frequently disagree about which creatures are considered beautiful, frightening, useful, edible or absurd.

This has complicated the cataloguing process considerably.

The creature recorded in this observation appeared shortly before nightfall.

WOT had travelled to a quiet red desert region where the ground reflected the colour of the sky so intensely that the horizon almost disappeared. A small pool of water had formed in the earth nearby — perfectly circular, impossibly blue, and still enough to reflect the evening star above.

WOT became interested immediately.

Humans often sit beside water while holding long sticks with string attached to them. WOT had observed this behaviour repeatedly and concluded it must be an important Earth ritual.

He attempted the procedure himself.

The objective remains unclear.
